Holiday Arrangements.

The business department requests that the special attention of advertisers in this journal shall be directed to the fact that " copy" for advertisements which are intended to appear in our next issue, dated the 8th inst., must come to hand by Saturday. This is due to the feet that allowance has to be made for August Bank Holiday, The issue will not be published until the evening of the 8th inst.

The Preston Show.

The Royal Lancashire Agricultural Society arranges its annual shows to include August Bank Holiday each year. The official dates are the 1st to 5th inst.

There will be a big gathering of commercial-motor interests, and all who visit the show will find plenty to engage their attention qua latest practice in the agrimotor, lorry and tractor branches. A forecast of the principal exhibits is given on page 490.

Topical Subjects.

Our leading articles this week deal with the following topical subjects : (1) " Will the L. C. Dennis Vans and Mail Work.

McNamara and Co.. Ltd.. of 12, Castle Street, Finsbury. E.C., is to be congratulated upon the rapid expansion of its motorvan branch, and particularly upon the acquirement of a depot in so central a situation as .Holywell Lane. Shoreditch. The company has a total fleet of some 120 Dennis vehicles, and the large majority of these vans is engaged upon mail-contracting work for local services in London, and upon long-distance runs. The London-Bristol mail, for example. is the longest motor-mail trip in the world: it averages 120 miles per journey.

Ken Willmott, the secretary and assistant-secretary of McNamara and Co., Ltd., were able to point with pride to the various developments and extensions in hand. Anybody who now desires to watch the latest Dennis vans in service may do so by standing for a few minutes in almost any part of London, particularly in Holborn.

Alderman H. Lyon Thomson, M.Inst.C.E., of Westminster, has been elected a vice-chairman of the Commercial Motor Users Association, in succession to Ca-pt. R. K. Bagnall-Wild. who retired on his joining the White Co.

Messrs. Harston and Son, of Lincoln, in the course of a letter in which they advise us that they are on the point of taking delivery of a Napier motorva,n, incidentally state that " Our conversion to motor traffic was due to a perusal of TEE COMMERCIAL MOTOR. '

Clayton's Birmingham Premises.

We are indebted to Mr. Ernest R. Winn, the Midlands manager for Clayton and Co. (Huddersfield), Ltd., whose Birmingham branch is at 7 and 8, Broad Street in that city, for some particulars of the company's excellent premises, of which we publish an illustration herewith. This Birmingham depot was formerly occupied by Messrs. MeNaught, of Worcester, and it has been adapted by the Clayton people, for the purposes of commercial motors, at considerable expense. There. is accommodation for six big lorries, a well-fitted workshop, an inspection pit, and washing bays. A fleet of Clayton vehicles will be maintained at the depot, in order to help local Cuttonterg at times of pressure.

At the inauguration of this Birmingham depot, the Karrier vehicles on view included 30-cwt,. three-ton and four-ton models. The three-tonner had just been completed to the order of Messrs. D. E. Ta,yler. of George Street. Birmingham, for the conveyance of this firm's heavy wire ; ii, is fitted with body by Messrs. Smith, of High Street. West Bromwich. The fourtonner is owned by Messrs. Wheatley and Son, flour millers. of West Bromwich, for whom Clayton's have a repeat order in hand at the moment. A Show Result.

Doncaster Corporation, per the General Manager' of the Corporation Tramways, wants tenders for a 30 h.p. petrol motor tower-wagon. Particulars are given on the third page of our sundry-advertisement announcements. We may also direct attention to the special notice on the second page of our

sundry-advertisement announcements, in regard to the effect of the August holiday.

Holiday Closures.

Owners are athised that many factories will be closed during the early part of August, and they are recommended to give instructions immediately for the dispatch of any necessary spare parts.

Yorkshire Announcement.

The directors of the Yorkshire Commercial Motor Co. ask us to announce that. the appointment of general manager has now been filled, and that they desire to thank the numerous applicants who responded to their advertisement in this journal.

American Makers Confer.

The manufacturers of heavy commercial motors in America have recently held their second convention. This meeting was occupied very largely in recommending to the National Association of Automobile Manufacturers the uniform_ guarantee and the warning plate. We gave particulars of these American departures in our issue of 4th April, [912, p. 99.
