Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Truck drivers could soon be hit with 21,000 fines if they are caught blocking bus lanes.

Deputy PM John Prescott believes the £20 fixed penalty fines are not high enough to deter motorists from obstructing bus lanes. The £1,000 fine is proposed in the Government document From Workhorse to Thoroughbred—a Better Rote for Bus Travel which puts buses at the heart of the Government's integrated transport poficy.

Bus-mounted cameras, which have been installed in parts of London, have proved an effective way to drive motorists out of bus lanes with bus journey times falling by as much as 40%. Now 360 more cameras are to be installed in London, and more will be set up across the country.

"Buses represent the best opportunity for leading a renaissance of public transport in this country," says Prescott. "That's what I said when we published our Transport White Paper last summer, and I stand by it. Buses are at the heart of integrated transport so we must work together to deliver the most modern, convenient and pleasant system possible."
