Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

IT was a common practice among lorry drivers to sign receipts for more petrol than they received, Abergavenny magistrates were told last week.

Thomas Holmes, joint proprietor of a garage, The Bungalow, Hereford Road, Abergavenny, was sent to prison for six months after he had admitted two charges of corruptly handing Largs Misljen, a lorry driver, 6s. as a reward for signing a receipt for 12 gallons of petrol whereas only 10 gallons were supplied.

The chairman told Holmes: "You have pleaded guilty to two offences of which we take a very serious view— they were deliberate attempts to defraud. The defence has admitted that this practice is going on all over the country, and it is time someone did something about it."

Misljen, of Pengam Avenue, Cern Forest, said he called at the garage and received 10 gallons of petrol. Holmes asked him if he would like some extra petrol booked to him and witness signed a receipt for 12 gallons. Holmes gave him 6s. The same thing happened the next time he called at the garage.

Notice of appeal against the sentence was given.

BRITAIN ENTERS U.S. MARKET

SPECIALLY designed breakdown equipment, previously produced only in the U.S.A., will be fitted to one of a number of Leylanil heavy-duty trucks which Shell D'Arcy Petroleum Development Co. of Nigeria, Ltd., are to use in the search for oil in that country.

The new equipment, which consists of a power-driven crane with twin jibs and a specially designed all-steel body, will be fitted to a Leyland Super Beaver chassis equipped with a Darlington Model 70 winch.

A power take-off on the gearbox will supply power for the crane through two clutch-operated reversing gearboxes, each of which is connected to a 10,000-1b. winch. The reversing boxes and the winches are built into the crane structure, one winch for each jib and each box incorporating a double multiplate clutch connected to an operating lever on each side of the vehicle.

This machine, with its powerful winching capacity, will be particularly suited to certain operational work in the oilfields, such as laying pipelines, erecting drilling rigs, and for breakdown recovery in jungle conditions.

The special equipment has been designed and completed by M. O. Harper, Ltd., Guildford, in collaboration with Shell engineers.
