Steam Wagon. Trailer.

STAND No. 24.

AMOST comprehensive series of exhibits is shown on the stand occupied by this -company. It comprises a 4 h.p. tractor on rubber tyres, a five ban steam wagon, also on rubber tyres, and a. Garrett 31. ton electric vehicle fitted with 'brewer's body. An exhibit of considerable interest is the either-side tipping trailer. This has a. hand-operated tipping gear, and st great point about it is that the body moves outwards some 4 ft. %effete it, tips; thus the material can be deposited -well away from the vehicle, and material such as sand does not slide down and impede the wheels of the trailer. The fifth exhibit is a three-bunk sleeping van -suitable for municipal work, road repairers etc.

The tractor has a two-cylin.dered compound engine mounted in. the usual manner at the top of the boiler, and it can be fitted with a governor for driving sta. tion.aryanachinery by belt. At.the near side of the rear axle between the cab and the wheel is fitted a large winding drum and wire rope. To utilize this the pins which lock the, neas side rear wheel to the axle are withdrawn so that the axle can revolve without driving the tractor.

The brakes are particularly large, the drums being nearly as large in diameter as the rear, wheels. Against the periphery of each drum presses a single brake shoe, which is operated by screw gear.

S40 The five ton steam wagon can also draw three tons on a separate trailer. The boiler is of the loco type, with Garrett's patent corrugated firebox. It is con strutted of mild-steel .plates riveted by hydraulic pressure and fitted With solid drawn steel tubes. The outside 13 lagged with asbestos and ;hair felt, woad and sheet-iron, with brass bands round the barrel.

The engine is of the overtype, horizontal compound design, the steam di tribution being by piston valve gear in

accordance with latest practice. The cylinders are steam-jacketed and surmounted by a dame carrying the safety valve, and provision is made for admitting high-pressure steam to both cylinders simultaneously for hill-climbing or starting with a heavy load • a separate exhaust is then used for each cylinder. The boiler feed pump is fitted on the right-hand horn plate, and driven by an eccentric geared down from the crankshaft.

Final drive is by roller chaiti, the bevel pinion differential gear being contained in the centre of the chain wheel.

The front axle is centrally pivoted, and the steering is by worm andwheel, and • from thence by chains. Powerful MCIpression springs are fitted to each chain, so that road shocks are not transmitted to the steering wheel. The 4 ton Garrett electric vehicle with brewer's body, which, while generally, in accordanZe with modern accepted practice, embodies certain -unique features. The controller gear is designedso that when the vehicle comes to a. standstill, or the brakes are applied, the handle must be brought back to the neutral position before restarting. This not only obviates thee possibility of accident through the vehicle starting off at an excessive speed, but avoids any risk of a heavy rush of current cans-leg damage to the motor or battery.

Special attention has been paid to the important problems of suspension and lubrioation. Although certain wellknown makes of approved battery can be supplied, the British-made Ironclad Exide accumulators are fitted as standard. These are slung in a special tray underneath the frame, the cells being mounted on wheels, and.easily accessible for inspection or otherwise. Thelmotor is capable of 300 per cent, overload, and transmission is by silent chain to a conntershaft, and thence by roller chains to the rear wheels
