• Two candidates are chasing lorry drivers' votes for the post of Transport and General Workers Union deputy generalsecretary. T&G national organiser Margaret Prosser and national secretary for the chemical and oil industry Fred Higgs are bidding to take over from Jack Adams, retiring as second in command to T&G generalsecretary Bill Morris.
The lorry driver vote could be crucial for the victor—there are about 150,000 commercial vehicle drivers in a T&G membership of 990,000. The election battle closes on 13 December.
