• Free brake testing for one week heralded the opening of a commercial vehicle brake testing and diagnostic facility for any make of brakes by Girling Ltd. The centre is in the company's new sales and service training centre at West Bromwich within minutes of M6. Operators will be offered brake testing facilities on a roller brake tester at a fee of £1.50 per axle after this week's free offer period. If required, maintenance work can be carried out.
One large own account fleet in Birmingham is considering giving its brake service work to Girling on a contract basis. Such a contract — which might cost as little as a ip a mile — would involve monthly, six-monthly and annual, pre-plating checks. The monthly check, which would last about two hours, would involve a rolling road brake test and visual examination of brake components. The six-monthly test, lasting about four hours, would involve dismantling the braking system, replacing or servicing any faulty parts and a roller brake test. The annual pre-testing and plating check would include a complete strip down on the brakes, replacement of any faulty parts, and a final check on the rolling road. This check would last a day. Such a contract would mean that Girling technical staff could certify the condition of the brakes in the event of any accident proceedings.
