Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Lorry drivers who lose their driving licences for private motoring offences should not automatically be disqualified from driving commercial vehicles. Former lorry driver Mr Leslie Huckfield, MP for Nuneaton, has made this claim in a letter to Mr John Peyton.

"This is a questionof the livelihood of lorry drivers," Mr Huckfield said. "I have had many representations from drivers stressing the difficulty of renewing their hgv licences following a period of disqualification," he added.

"I am asking Mr Peyton to review the

whole procedure.

"Lorry drivers have to hold their hgv licences for six consecutive months or else take a new test," Mr Huckfield said.

"If they have lost their jobs because their licence has been taken away, drivers often find it difficult to get a lorry to take their test on," he claimed.

"Drivers don't want special treatment. If they are 'done' for a motoring offence they expect to get what the law provides. But by cancellation of their goods vehicle licence as well they arc denied a living and thereby punished twice."
