Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

During the montei of April schemes for widening, reconstruction and other improvements of classified roads and bridges, and for the construction of new roads and bridges of elassification value, involving a total estimated expenditure of £2,131,000 were formally approved for Road Fund grants.

Amongst the most important schemes are the widening and reconstruction Of a section of the Doncaster-Grimsby trunk road, which will cost £127,000, and the widening and reconstruction of eight miles of surface between Norwich and Great Yarmouth, including the construction of a new road at :Acle, which will involve spending £135,000.

Grants have also been made towards the construction or improvement of classified roads at Hillingdon, in Middlesex (1152,000), and towawis the cost of the acquisition of land for the new Chertsey road (£141 000).

Financial assistance has also been Indicated toward works on unclassified roads and bridges in various counties and county boroughs, including the West Riding of Yorkshire (170,000), Perthshire (£40,000), Staffordshire (135,000), North Riding of Yorkshire (£30,000) and Essex (no,000), the total estimated cost being £346.000.

Brush-Thornycroft Trolley-buses.

We are informed by John I. Thornycroft and Coe, Ltd., Thornycroft House, Smith Square, London, S.W.1, that it has entered into an arrangement with the Brush Electrical Engineering Co., Ltd., Falcon Works, Loughborough, for the sale by the latter concern of Brush-Thornycroft trolley-buses. These vehicles will incorporate Thornycroft chassis and Brush bodies.

Nottingham Corporation has taken delivery of one of these machines ; it is of the six-wheeled type with a doublesaloon body and B.T.H. electrical gear. Three braking systems are provided,

B22 these being rheostatic, Westinghouse air and hand-applied mechanical. The first and second systems operate in sequence by the depression of the pedal.

M. of T. Upholds Municipal Action.

The Minister of Transport has upheld the decision of Sheffield Corporation in refusing licences to Premier Coaches and Garage, Ltd., and International Express Services, Ltd. In the ease of the former concern the decision was without prejudice to any application which it might make in future to the Commissioners.

Passenger-transport Results at Leeds.

For the year ended March 31ste1931, the total receipts of the passenger-transport department of Leeds Corporation were £1,050,320, a figure which is £5,050 higher than that for the previous year. The receipts from the bus services increased from £106,273 to £124,925. The vehicle-mileage covered was much greater, especially in regard to buses.

the aggregate total being 15,979,490. It is estimated that during the year the population of the city was carried 286 times, the amount paid in fares per head of population being £1 14s. Sid. • Objection to Ministerial Interference.

The County Councils Association hag expressed strong objection to any attempt on the part of the Ministry of Transport to enforce, against the judgment of the county councils and their expert advisers, compliance with rigid conditions as to the layout and construction of roads. The • association has asked the Minister of • Transport to receive a deputation on the subject.
