use on the Continent where they must be used in some countries to denote a breakdown or other mishap. I do not think that they are a legal requirement in the United Kingdom, but is it legal to use them if desired?

AWarning triangles may be used in the United Kingdom under the Traffic Signs (Temporary Obstructions) Regulations 1966 SI 1474. This lays down the form which the triangle should take but their use is optional. They may be placed on any part of a motorway or other., road, footway or verge to warn traffic of a temporary obstruction. The sign must be at least 46m (50 yd) in advance of the obstruction and on the same side of the road.
