Follow the BuildingofSeat Frames to a Uniform Design THE question of introducing a form of standardization in the design and manufacture of seat frames for passenger-service vehicles formed the subject of a meeting and exhibition recently held in Birmingham. The sponsors. were Messrs. Deans and Son, of Beverley, 'Yorks, and Accles and Pollock, Ltd., of Birmingham, and there was a representative gathering of operators and coachbuilders.

It was agreed that the makers mentioned had evolved a.design which took standardization so far as it could be taken to-day. without 'unduly Jimiting the' range. Mr. Prost,. managing.director of 'strachans; Lid.,•cOnSidered'the question was one which concerned the operator, whilst Mr. T. Rowland, chief engineer of ' Birniinghare transport department, said that; whilst .standardization was a good thiag during-. an exigency, he was doubtful whether it could be carried on, except. perhaps, as it applied to dimensions.

Mr. Froggatt, of the M.C.W. concern; was -cancerned about _the regulations with which bodybuilders were being continually Confronted •througholit the country.

Dealing with.the products of Messrs. Deane and Son and their associated .concern of Accles and Pollock. Ltd., the seat frames are made up of solid-drawn steel tubes with the side bends of hardened and tempered chromemolybdenurn-ailoy steel tubes of the butted type.

So far. as the top rails are concerned the entire range in the series can be supplied in stainless steel, either chromium plated or covered in cellulose acetate. Stainless steel is recommended as being the most satisfactory, as such rails improve with handling.

Some points to which attention may be called are the rounded corners oil the front bearer tubes and the design of the frame in general, which make for greater safety to the passengers; the advantagee in the matter of installation, packing and safety in transit cif the loose leg; tne provision.of slotted Wes in the sole plates and body-side fixing brackets, which Make for instant adjustment in all directions, and ease of installation to comply with seatspacing regulations.

With such a form of standardization as has been achieved, there is complete interchangeability of squab and cushion as between one seat frame and another. This means an even distribution of wear on the trimming materials as the cushions can be reversed and the squabs changed over as may be considered necessary.

The open-top type of grab rail has' obvious advantages from the passengers' point of view, andperhaps a less obvious one in the reduced wear OD the trimming. material.

A choice can be given of different types of top rail whilst still retaining the standardized form of base frame. • In connection with the latter, the design is the same foe seats on both -the near side and off side of the bus, so that any squab or any cushion will fit any seat-frame on the vehicle.

In order to ensure the greatest safety for passengers, every care has been taken to avoid ahy form of projection such as might happen if screws were used in any part of the assembly. Pop or blind rivets are therefore employed for securing the top rail to the base frame, to make, too, a much neater job.

These standardized frames will be known under the trade mark of Dapta. Other makers will' be invited to under-, take their manufacture and -a recognized standard of material quality and workmanship will be maintained.
