Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

A REVIEW of all lorry speed limits is being undertaken at present by the Department of Transport, chief mechanical engineer John Furness revealed last week.

Mr Furness was talking to an Institute of Road Transport Engineers meeting in London last week, and said that the review would establish how existing speed limits could be altered for the benefit of the industry. This will then be passed to the transport ministers for possible action.

In the meantime, the Freight Transport Association has renewed its call for the 40mph speed limit on top quality Aclass roads to be raised to 50mph, as recommended in the Armitage Report on lorries, people and the environment.

Former FTA president John Elliott told FTA West Scotland members in Glasgow this week that 14 per cent of the total mileage run by heavy lorries is on dual carriageways.

"A 50mph speed limit negotiated into driving schedules and new agreements would produce enormous benefits.
