Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

SEDDON ATKINSON has launched five new vehicles in the 300-Series to join the six-wheeler introduced in late 1978, writes GRAHAM MONTGOMERIE.

Four of the new models, three tractive units of 24, 28 and 32 tons gross and a 4x2 drawbar rigid are available immediately while the fifth, a 30 ton eight-wheeler will go into production later in the year. A full technical description of the range appears on page 44.

I drove one of the new models at Blackpool — a 32 ton tractive unit, which was the only fully laden machine available. For its power category the vehicle was exceptionally lively and should do SA sales nothing but good.

In contrast to previous Seddon Atkinson practice in the lower price brackets, a rev counter is standard. The ZF splitter box was easy to use, being spring-loaded.

One minor criticism, though — the gear lever is too close to the driver's seat when in fifth and sixth position. Allowing for the usual freeing of the linkage, after a few months the lever might be obstructed by the seat.

There was a very easy and progressive take up from the clutch when moving away from rest with the 32 tonner, making for driver comfort in heavy traffic.

Using the splitter meant a change in engine speed of some 400rpm, about the norm for this weight/power category. The splitter is controlled via a rotating sleeve which is mounted just underneath the top of the gearlever. This worked very well and was convenient to use providing I could remember which way the switch moved.

The in-cab noise level was good under most driving conditions, and there was no audible turbocharger whine.

Seddon Atkinson has been very successful in the maximum capacity field since the launch of the 400 five years ago: the 300-Series 32-tonner could be a useful addition.
