Mr. William Baines has been appointed rolling stock superintendent to Burnley Corporation, in place of Mr. F. L. S. Whitaker, who has retired after 42 years of service. Mr. Whitaker has enjoyed success as an inventor, as well as a, maintenance engineer.

Mr. 0. H. Corble, who was recently appointed assistant to the chief general manager of the London and North Eastern Railway Co., has been appointed a director of the Scottish Motor Traction Co., Ltd., the East Midland Motor Services, Ltd., and the Northern General Transport Co., Ltd., in succession to Mr. W. Liverpool and Second Men.

As already reported in The Commercial Motor, discussion has been taking place at meetings of Liverpool Corporation's health committee on the employment of second men on motor vehicles hired at day rates. The committee has now passed a resolution authorizing the city engineer to arrange for obtaining from the firms who tendered for 1932 contracts, quotations for day-to-day hire until the decision has been arrived at by the co-ordination special committee and the city council, with regard to the matter.

"Western Transport" Results.

The gross revenue of the Western Transport Co., Ltd., for the year 1931 amounted to £141,569, as against £134,436 a year earlier. After meeting all expenses and allocating 120,000 to the renewals account, there remains £7,824. A dividend of 4 per cent, is being paid on the ordinary shares and, after this has been met, £9,595 remains to be carried forward, as against £7.371 a year earlier. The company is controlled jointly by Tilling and British Automobile Traction, Ltd., and the Great Western Railway Co., and operates a number of services in districts in Mid and North Wales.
