The popularity of Freightliners in Russia is leading Daimler to consider the 'enormous potential' of this market. Oliver Dixon reports.

DAIMLER might sell trucks from its US subsidiary Freightliner in Russia. According to reports in the Continental media over the past few days, Daimler Truck chief Andreas Renschler has described Russia as having"enormouspotential", being the only large emerging market with standards close to those in the EU and the US.

"The distances in Russia are similar to the American market and Freightliner trucks might make sense for some customers.Renschler told Bloomberg News Some 4,000 used Freightliners were sold in Russia last year, which is more than the number of used, European-sourced MercedesBenz trucks. This was influenced by the weakness of the US dollar against the Euro and the Russian rouble. Two Russian Freightlinerbadged dealers, which claim official status and US-trained staff, are listed on Freightliner's website.

Daimler has long been rumoured to be preparing to establish a manufacturing presence within the CIS, the commonwealth of 11 former Soviet republics including Russia and Ukraine.

Some years ago Freightliner investigated the possibility of bringing its Argosy cabover model to Europe, but this was squashed by Mercedes-Benz in a bid to protect the Actros's market share.
