TWO thoughts on maintenance of a .5-I-litre B.M.C. diesel engine win three guineas for Mr. D. V. Brown, of Monro Transport, London, N.17. A tool which he finds useful is one for fitting the camshaft bearing. This is a pilot reamer which is located in the bearing, the centre section having a greater diameter and being used as the cutter. When changing the water pump, says Mr. Brown, the fan blades have to he fitted by feel. This means difficulty when lining up four bolt holes. One answer is to take a 1-in, bolt, remove the head, screw in by hand and use it as a jig. The fan blades and distance washers can be threaded over the dummy bolt. The jig is removed for the last bolt.

Comments Handyman: "It is quite true that no reamer and pilot is listed in the B.M.C. 5.1-litre engine overhaul kit for the camshaft bush. The drill laid down, and so far satisfactory, is to press home the bush, locate to mate the oil ways, then ream with a line reamer to between 1-9995 in. and 2-0010 in. Brown Brothers can usually supply such a tool. Adjustable reamers should not be used. I agree that refitting the fan blade assembly is a darned nuisance with the radiator in place. A trick I use is either to fit a dummy stud or 'kill' the job once and for all by replacing the bolts with fixed studs."
