DETAILS of the proposals to run additional bus services in the event of the closure of the rail passenger service on the Bournemouth to Temple Combe section were given at a public inquiry by the Transport Users' Consultative Committee for the south-east last week.

Associated Motorways would run a new cross-country express service between Bristol and Bournemouth, routed close to the line of the railway; the Southern National Omnibus Co. Ltd. proposes a new Blandford-Glastonbury service to give connections for London trains; a business service between Stalbridge and Poole would be provided by Hants and Dorset Motor Services Ltd.; and Bern Regis and District Motor Services plans to strengthen its Sturminster Newton to Blandford timetable.

Concerned about Booking Main objector to the closure was Dorset County Council who, through its clerk, demanded that B.R. should subsEdize operators if the new facilities proved uneconomic and should pay for the erection of bus shelters. There were 100 objectors altogether, and individual members of the public were concerned about luggage on buses and were very critical of the pre-booking arrangements on express services.

For Associated Motorways, Mr. C. H. Preece defended the pre-booking procedure, pointing out that there were agents in all towns and villages along the route. He said they expected no difficulties with luggage.
