Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

'1"HE South Wales Traffic Commis' sioner heard further evidence in Cardiff, last week--on the joint application by the Cardiff and Newport authorities to increase the frequency of their bus service between the two towns. Application was also made by the Western Welsh and Red and White concerns for a variation of the existing conditions of their service, which prevent the picking Ito and setting down or passengers at intermediate stopping places, Both applications were opposed by the Great Western Railway.

Mr. Richard Hill, traffic superintendent of Newport Transport Department. said that he thought the existing ser

vices were inadequate. More buses would be needed to operate an increased frequency, but he denied that this would be arranged at the expense of other services.

Evidence having been called to prove that people were being left behind at Cardiff and Newport every day and at the intermediate stopping places, Mr. Stuart John, representing the Western Welsh and Red and White undertakings, opened the application for these coinpanics by calling Mr. T. G. Davies, traffic manager of the Western Welsh company.

Mr. Davies spoke of the available accommodation on the company's longdistance buses leaving Cardiff, which would relieve the congestion if the company were permitted to drop passengers at intermediate stopping places.

He agreed with Mr. Hill, who said that the public was much more attracted by bus travel, but his own view was that this interest was entirely because of the increase in railway fares. When the railways introduced cheapday tickets between Cardiff and Newport a few weeks ago, there was fallingoff in bus travel between these two points.

The Commissioner adjourned the case until November 8.
