Keen Competition. for the Awards in the Event Organized by the Area Committee of the Commercial Motor Users Association. A Full List of Prizewinners in All Classes.

IDEAL weather conditions favoured the sixth annual motor parade of the Preston Area Committee of the Commercial Motor Users Association. About 50 vehicles participated, and, considering the limited entry, the prize list worked out on a generous scale.

Only six steam wagons were paraded, these being Leylands entered by 11. Viney and Co., Ltd. They Secured several .prizes. The keenest competition was for the petrol-vehicle fleet prizes, and S.P.D., Ltd., with two Thornycrofts, carried off the first prize and the Viney Cup. Although there were three passenger-carrying vehicles

on parade, only one was entered for the single's class and thus held an undisputed claim to the Matthew Brown Cup.

There was a good number of entries for the classes set aside for vehicles carrying advertisements, and the judges awarded the first prize to Bradshaw's Motor House, who paraded an Austin Seven having a body representing a low-tension battery. The Preston parade is the only one in Lancashire at which there is a special class for Ford vehicles, and that which is adjudicated the best receives the Bradshaw Silver Cup. Entries for the cup corn

petitions are restricted to members of the C.M.U.A.

Speaking at the luncheon to the judges, stewards and officials of the parade, Mr. F. G. Bristow referred to the enormous growth in the number of mechanically propelled road vehicles in use and added that the amount paid in road tax was over £15,000,000 per annum. The question had been asked whether parades had had their day. It was his opinion that where such support could be obtained from the local authorities, as at Preston where both the Mayor and the Chief Constable were interested in the parade, it would

be a long time before such events were discontinued. The time had not yet arrived when it could be said that parades had achieved their maximum efficiency.

The Chief Constable of Preston, Mr. J. P. K. Watson, alluded to the development of road traffic, and spoke particularly of the enormous increase in the number of vehicles passing through Preston to Blackpool. A recent census revealed that within 24 • hours 16,000 vehicles passed through the town, bound principally for Blackpool. From experience he could Confidently say that he knew no one more entitled to the designation "the gentleman of the road" than the heavy motor lorry driver. Courteous to others, he manifested thoughtfulness and a ready responsiveness to the directions of the police. Mr. Watson suggested that, in future years, it might be advisable to select another venue for the parade, because of the great amount of traffic now using the arterial road On which the parade was held.

Major-General Long, Mr. C. Le M. Gosselin, Mr. G. J. Gibbs, A.M.I.E.E., A.C.G.I., F.R.A.S., and Mr. R. W. G. Barnett spoke of the improved quality of the machines presented for the parade. In some of the classes they said it was most difficult to determine the order of merit. The challenge cups were presented to the successful drivers by the Mayor of Preston.

The method of awarding marks was similar to that adopted in previous years, each judge being responsible for a detailed part of the vehicles. Their respective markings were afterwards totalled against each vehicle, which was examined by eight judges. The following is the full list of prizewinners :- Dewburst Silver Cup for the owner of the best fleet of two steam vehicles of any make :—H. Viney and Co., Ltd. (Leylands).
