Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

II Disgruntled members of the Institute of Road Transport Engineers opposed to the planned merger with the Institution of Plant Engineers intend to fight the move at a special meeting in London on 1 June.

The IRTE Merger Protest Group's opposition is being pubHcised by dissenting council member John OcksonSimpson, who reports: "My phone has been ringing for the last two days from members who are objecting and who want to join us."

While the majority of IRTF council members have backed the changes, a number of rank and file members fear a merger will mean losing a practical, road transport-focused engineering organisation. An amalgamation will create a new, larger body called the Society of Operations Engineers.

However, Dickson-Simpson fears the IRTE would be left with no active council of its own.

One of the founding fathers of the IRTE, which was established in 1944, was Commercial Motor editor Gordon Mackenzie Junner. For more information on the IRTEMPG contact: 0207 727 0253.
