LEAKING TANKER DAMAGED ROAD

A T Cardiff County Court on Tuesday, I-1 Judge 0. Temple Morris, Q.C., gave judgment for the Ministry of Transport against the Storage Co. (Penarth). Ltd. He maintained that the company had been negligent in allowing hydrochloric acid to leak from a tanker, and awarded damages.

Mr. Meurig Evans, for the Ministry, said that on the main trunk road at Abergavenny, for about a quarter of a mile the surface was coated With highly dangerous corrosive acid. Despite prompt action, great damage was done to the road and the limestone beneath.

The Judge said it might be that some statutory regulations were required to control the transport of this highly corrosive liquid on public highways.
