One factor in the situation at Stockton-on-Tees is the recent undertaking by the Stockton Corporation of responsibility for attendance at fires in the rural district, and it is felt that the increased area to be covered will absolutely necessitate the purchase of a motor fireengine very soon.

Adler Autos for the Frankfort.

Our Berlin correspondent writes : " Unlike Berlin, which pins its faith to the electromobile, Frankfort-on-the-Main manifests a preference for the petrol type, and I forward illustrations of one of five v9hicles just acquired from the Corporation from the Adlerwerke, whose chassis are too well known on your side to need any description from myself. The five vehicles in question consist of three firepumps, an escape and a tender. The accompanying view shows one of the auto-pumps, each of which throws upwards of 400 gallons a minute under a pressure of nine atmospheres by means of a fivestage centrifugal pump with a direct drive from the engine. The Adler escape, particulars of which I will furnish later, is of the revolving type, extended by electric energy to a height of 72 ft., a small dynamo, driven by the motor, supplying the necessary current. Each of the five vehicles is fitted with a four-cylinder motor developing 30 h p."

Our illustration is reproduced from a photograph that was taken outside the fire station in Penang, and it may be remarked that the excellent training of the men is wholly due to the efforts of Chief Officer Hamilton.

Govan Town Council is about to acquire either one or two motor fire-engines, and a sub-committee is now engaged upon the preparation of a report as to the type or types of engines or pumps to be acquired.

£8,000 on Automobiles for the Hanover Fire Brigade.

The Hanover Corporation has resolved upon the motorization of the entire fire brigade. Senator Weber, who supported the motion, insisted that, on the score of economy alone, horse-drawn vehicles should be replaced by automobiles. A horsed vehicle, said he, cost the Corporation £250 yearly ; whereas an automobile could be maintained for £55. Hanover has already three lire-brigade automobiles, and the Corporation purposes acquiring nine more at a cost of £8,000. Gerinin fire brigades are taking up motorization very seetonsly.
