QUESTIONED by Mr. W. P. James, West Midland Licensing Authority, an applicant at Shrewsbury last week said that he bought sand, shale and gravel ordered by customers and sold it to them after delivery.

Mr. E. T. Taylor, Lillieshall, who sought to add a vehicle of 4 tons to his B licence, said that he also handled steel in a similar way. • He admitted that a statement made to an enforcement officer, last September, that his present_ B-licensed vehicle had not worked for hire or reward for two years was incorrect.

The current licence, said Mr. P. Northcote, for the applicant, permitted c14 the carriage of goods for J. Bibby and Son, Ltd., within 25 miles. As well as seeking another vehicle, Mr. Taylor wished to have conditions added to cover the transport of agricultural goods within 50 miles, road materials, sand and gravel within 25 miles, and scrap steel up to 15 miles.

Mr. James refused to add a second vehicle to the licence, but added a condition to permit work for a farmer within: 25. miles. He thought that the buying-andselling arrangement in•regard to steel was. a subterfuge by Mr. Taylor to enable him to carry it.

His livelihood would be at stake if he were caught using his vehicle wrongfully.
