IT was announced on Wednesday that

United Carriers, Ltd.' would cease operations after April 30. The company's demise follows the decision of British Road Services to withdraw.

An official statement said: "When notice of termination of A and B agreements was sent •to contracting meat carriers and chartered operators in July last, it was indicated in a covering letter that the management, in consultation with B.R.S. and other operators, would proceed with plans for the continuance of the company's activities, which would take into account the interests of all operators associated with the company. It was stated that the formation of a new company would probably be necessary.

"Subsequently, the possibility of setting up a new company was explored and discussions took place With a number of operators whose co-operation in such a project would be essential to its success. It has recently become clear, however, that the necessary support for a new company would not be forthcoming."

Thefl management of United Carriers said they hoped that members would continue to co-operate whenever possible, and, in particular, would refrain from cutting rates.

HAULIERS WANT CHANGES IN LICENSING

PROPOSALS from area committees of the Road Haulage Association for the amendment of the licensing system were considered on Wednesday by the national licensing committee.

Dissatisfaction was expressed with the wide freedom given to farmers. On the other hand, there Was a call for greater freedom for hauliers generally and for the repeal of Section 9(4) of the 1953 Act, which allows a licence to be suspended or revoked because a statement of intention has not been fulfilled.

There was dissatisfaction with the situation which allows contract-A licences virtually to be exchanged for ordinary-A licences. It was proposed that all written evidence submitted at sittings should, at the end of a case, be handed to the Licensing Authority and kept on his files.
