The committee advise upon the selection of candidates for scholarships and grants under the Sir William Chamberlain Memorial Trust.

TAKING POLISH OFF SETTS L'QUIPMENT made by the British Oxygen Co., Ltd., is being used by Glasgow Corporation to remove the dangerous polish of granite road blocks. More efficient than pneumatic drills for this purpose, the B.O.C. appliance enables a series of oxy-acetylene flames to be played on the road surface. This action cracks the polish on the setts and imparts a lasting roughness.

The corporation have 113 miles of granite-sett surface. The equipment, comprising a three-wheeled trolley with the burner and an oxygen-cylinder trailer, can be operated by two men.

TO THE CAPE IN AN OILER

THE first attempt at the England to Cape Town journey by an oilengined vehicle is to be made by a Commer 25-ewt, van in which a Perkins P4 unit has been installed. It is to be driven by Mr. George Ilinchliffe, owner of A.B.C. Garages (Bradford), Ltd., and his wife. They 'hope to arrive in Cape Town in May. The vehicle has been modified to provide comfortable living accommodation,
