Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Now run as a self-contained show at a new venue, the RHA's Tankcon '87 caters for specialist tanker suppliers and operators. Here is our selection of some of the more interesting exhibits to be seen at Blackpool.

CLAYTON COMMERCIALS

• Examples of new and stretched tanks are to be seen on the Clayton Commercial stand (1-5).

Its standard 29,000 litre tank is shown in double conical single-compartment configuration. It has tri-axle mechanical suspension and meets S1.1059 requirements for earning inflammable, corrosive and toxic materials.

A rebuilt unit is also on show, stretched from 25,000 to 30,000 litres and fitted with tri-axle suspension. Clayton has brought two special tanks along: a 38-tonne rubber-lined model built to carry corrosives under IMO and ADR regulations, and a three-compartment stainless steel vessel designed for easy inspection.

DRUM

• Drum Engineering, the largest UK manufacturer of road tanker discharge equipment, has its full range of equipment on stands 71-73. The Drum STIC liquid measuring system, which has recently been given Weights and Measures approval, can be seen fitted to a BP vehicle.

H ENDRICICSON HORDE

• Tandem rubber frameless running gear, built to BP Oil specification, is exhibited on stand 4-5. Built by Hendrickson Norde at Sywell, Northants, it can carry 19 tonnes and is a standard unit supplied to all BP tank building suppliers. The company also supplies running gear to the tanker trailer industry using any suspension of acceptable quality, and a full design service is offered.

HOPE

• The range of Hope Technical Developments safety and service equipment is shown on stand 6. These include the Hope anti-jack-knife device, the Safe-T-Bar, the Sens-N-Stop, and the Scrutineer.

The anti-jack-knife device is claimed to eliminate trailer swing; the Safe-T-Bar is an under-run protection device that can swing up to allow progress over rough ground; the Sens-N-Stop is designed to make reversing safer, and the Scrutineer enables braking and lighting systems on semitrailers to be tested without coupling up to a powered tractive unit.

HOYERS (UK)

• Hoyers boasts one of England's most sophisticated tanker cleaning stations on its 27ha site in Huddersfield. It also offers steam and electrical heating facilities for tanks, container lifting and storage, drumming services and warehousing. Exhibiting on stands 20-21, Hoyers (UK) is one of the Hoyers group's 25 European branches, which operate 1,200 road tanks and over 1,800 Hoyer Tainers (tank containers).

IMS

• The SAF self tracking axle forms the centre piece on the IMS stand (23). For multi-axle rigids and trailers it is claimed to extend tyre life, and lowers stresses on the chassis. Also shown are George Fischer Triplex spoked wheels and Monolex one-piece disc wheels.

MAIDMENT

• Stand 23 in park A features a Maidment tank with a 21,500 litre five-compartment tank to full petroleum regulations. Mounted on a Leyland Constructor, it has a Dean 28/ 85 hosereel and a Drum Mercury 3 pump.

MS&

• M&G claims low tare weight for its latest 350 SF7 model (stand 9 in park A). The box-section tank shell uses new plastics moulding technology, has a capacity of 35,000 litres and weighs 6.5 tonnes on BPW suspension. The seven compartments' inner cells are moulded using Vinylester resins, and there is fire resistant foam up to 25cm thick at the rear of the tank.

PEABODY HOLMES

• Positive displacement air blowers are displayed on stand 41 by Peabody Holmes. The type 68 RBT, designed for discharging bulk tankers; type 610 RBT, for use with animal feed; type 613 RBT, for animal feed and grain carriers; and the recently-introduced type 220 RBT are all on show.

The type 220 RBT provides a fully relieved pressure of 1.725bar and has inbuilt torque overload protection and a tachometer drive fitted as standard.

RUBERY OWENROCKWELL

• Flexair flexible-link air suspension is exhibited on the RO-R stand (45-47). It has a capacity of 11,000kg, and is recommended for frame centres of 980mm (twin) and 1,200mm (single-wheel). Based on the parabolic trailing arm concept, the two leaf springs are linked and assembled to minimise bending and torsional stresses transmitted to the bushes and axle beam.

The proven Indair system, which is also on display, is available in both singleand twin-wheel versions.

RYLAND TANKERS

• The main exhibit from Ryland Tankers (stand 39 in Park A) is an LPG tanker based on a Seddon Atkinson 301 6x4 rigid chassis plated to 22.6 tonnes GVW and built to West Cumberland Farmers specification. Its 9.0-tonne capacity pressure vessel is built by Motherwell Bridge Fabricators and uses a Blackmer pump, Collins Youldon electrical hose reel and enclosed metering equipment. A similar but refurbished tank on Seddon Atkinson's stand is show on a 2-11 chassis.

TANKFREIGHT

• Centrepiece on the Tankfreight stand (13-14 in Park A) is its 1,000th tanker. It was built by Tankfix at its Heckmondwike site, which is claimed to be Britain's first national network of workshops specialising in the modification, maintenance and refurbishment of tankers.

Also on the Tankfreight stand is Tankclean, which operates a chain of six specialist cleaning stations. Experts from Tankfreight, which claims to be the largest tanker haulier in the UK, will be on the stand to offer advice.

TEC TRAILER EQUIPMENT

• TEC Trailer Equipment and Components (stand 12-13) is making its Tankcon debut with an example of tanker trailer running gear fitted with its Tecair suspension and unitary Drub axles.

Used together on a tri-axle they are claimed to save up to 200kg in unladen weight.

THOMPSON

/ On stand 37 in park A Thompson Tankers is showing a 10,000 litre stainless steel double compartment tanker on a 24-tonne GVW rigid chassis. Built to meet ADR requirements for carrying trichlorethylene, it includes a pump, meter and hosereel.

There is also a 35,000 litre seven-compartment aluminium alloy tank semi-trailer for carrying petroleum products. It features full bottom loading and a vapour recovery system. Inside (stand 31) Thompson is showing a graphic display and video presentation on the company.

TIFT

• The Fuelmaster hoses from TI Flexible Tubes (T1FT) make their debut on stands 38 and 39. Designed for hydrocarbon fuels and solvents, they feature an anti-static lining as standard.

Tift also displays a wide range of products suitable for use with all sorts of materials, and is showing a range of highly flexible blower hoses for compressor units.

TORRIDON

• Torridon Steel is displaying two tankers on stands 35 and 36. One is a 30,000 litre single-compartment stainless steel tank that will carry aviation fuel for Conoco. It uses Norde Tr-Axle rubber suspension, and is discharged by a 75rrun Pluto Pump.

The other uses a Leyland Constructor chassis to carry up to 20,000 litres of lubricating oils for Petrofina in nine of its compartments: the 10th 250 litre compartment carries flushing oil to purge the other compartments and the flushing system.

UNIVERSAL BUIXHANDLING

• There are three examples of Universal Bulk-Handling's road tanker semi trailers at Tankcon (stand 41-41 park B).

Two are 30,000 litre singlecompartment stainless steel semi-trailers certified for ADRY IM04 with tonics, One is for A S Jones and has Lodge parabolic spring suspension and Rubery Owen tri-axles with a Tec-Air lift front axle. The other is for Reliance Tankers and has Wheelbase Engineering parabolics suspension with Rubery Owen running gear.

UB-H's third exhibit is a 18,000 litre carbon steel tanker semi-trailer designed to run at 38-tonnes GCW. Its two unequal compartments are lined with Hypalon rubber for conveying battery acids. It is one of an order for three placed by James Lynch (Transport).

VOLVO

• Volvo is launching its 411 Plug-In PT-0 on stand 49 in park C. It is called the Plug-In because of its coupling between the PT-0 and Fl Pump: it can be mounted to all sixand eight-bolt SAE apertures.

Volvo also has its mobile exhibition trailer at Tankcon, displaying the company's full range of products for the tanker market.

WILCOX GROUP

• A 51.5m3 pressure tipping tank on an all-aluminium semitrailer weighing 6.0 tonnes unladen is one of two exhibits on the Wilcox Group stand (2930 park A). It is fitted with the latests in hydraulic stabiliser legs with full interlocking circuits. The complete unit has been sold to Longsons of Chapel-en-le-Frith along with two new 44.8m3 tanks.
