A Smaller Entry at the C.M.U.A.'s Annual Event, but the Standard of Vehicles Well Maintained. Full List of Prizewinners.

CLOSE upon 70 vehicles were entered in the tenth annual parade of the Liverpool area committee of the Commercial Motor Users Association, held at Liverpool on Saturday, June

8th. Although the number was not quite so large as last year, the judges, amongst whom were Mr. George Mourn, C.B.E., president of the C.M.U.A., and Mr. F. G. Bristow, M.Inst_T., the general secretary, expressed themselves very enthusiastically as to the condition of the competing machines.

In the 'classes for single vehicles there were 51 competitors, and 41 of these earned the special award—a triangular white-metal enamelled badge for affixing to the vehicle. This becomes the property of the owner. As many as 58 out of the 68 machines on parade won either special awards or one of the three classes of certificates. To qualify for the special award a vehicle had to obtain 90 per cent. or more of the possible marks, for a first-elass certificate between al per cent. and 89 per cent., for a second-class certificate 70 per cent. to 79 per cent, and for a thirdclass certificate 60 per cent. to 69 per cent. It is creditable that 80 per cent of all the competing vehicles should merit 90 or more marks.

Having regard to the fact that four silver challenge cups and cash prizes for drivers were also offered, the

parade deserved to have been much better Supported. Only eight petrol fleets and four steam :fleets were paraded. The strongest individual class was that for single petrol vehicles owned by non-haulage contraCtors. e„.; Three of the four cups changed hands.• The Sentinel*Cup passed from Greenall, Whitley and Co., Ltd., Warrington, to Peter Walker and Son, Ltd., also of Warrington, the vehicles being Sentinels in each case. The latter company had, however; to-relinquish the Thornycroft Cup offered for the hest fleet of petrol vehicles to S.P.D., Ltd.,. Port Sunlight, which concern also retains the Jacob 'Cup for the best petrol vehicle of any make on parade—a Maudslay. As regards the Fairrie Cup, this was won for the first time by the Grieve Haulage Co., Ltd., with a Sentinel steam wagon.
