Albert Burrows, 49, general manager of Liverpool City Transport, has been appointed directorgeneral of the new Merseyside Passenger Transport Executive. The announcement, made on Monday, completes the list of director-generals for the four new PTEs, and reveals that Merseyside is the only one where the general manager of the largest municipal bus undertaking to be transferred to the PTA has been appointed head of the operating Executive. It was expected that this rule would have applied to all four PTAs. Mr. Burrows started his transport career as a junior with Warrington Corporation Transport in 1936. After experience with several undertakings, he was appointed general manager of Lancaster Corporation Transport in 1956. He moved to a similar position with Barrow Corporation Transport in 1961 and to Chesterfield Corporation Transport in 1963. His most important step forward catne in February 1966 when he left Chesterfield to take up his present position with Liverpool City Transport which has just over 1,000 buses.

W. G. Copes-take, general manager of Birmingham City Transport, has been appointed operations director of the West Midlands PTE; R. H. Addlesee, general manager of Wolverhampton Corporation Transport, has been appointed labour and staff relations director. Both directors will take up their appointments on September 15, together with the new director-general, F. J. Lloyd (CM June 27). Thomas Atkin, director, general haulage. Tayforth Ltd., has been elected chairman of the Scottish section of the Institute of Transport; P. Chalmers Somerville, managing director, George Gibson and Co. Ltd. is immediate past chairman. W. Murray, traffic supt., Glasgow Corporation Transport; A. Cameron Miller. legal adviser IScotlancl(. BRB; and A. F. Rowe, Scottish area manager, Atlas Express Ltd., are vice-chairmen. A. B. Birnia, Scottish LA. is treasurer; T. F. Watt and J. R. C. MacPherson, both of Glasgow Corporation Transport, are secretary and assistant secretary respectively.

E. G. Spearing has been appointed assistant managing director of Brown Brothers Ltd. Joining the company in 1945, Mr. Spearing served at Nottingham and Edinburgh, and subsequently in a number of appointments at head office. He became general sales manager in 1953. was elected to the board in 1 963 and has been marketing director since 1966. J. Foster, Chance Bros. Ltd.. has been re-elected chairman of the FTA education and training committee.

Derek H. F. Joyce. who recently retired from Shell-Mex and BP Ltd., has been elected an honorary member of the FTA.

Arthur Dodsworth, 41, has been appointed general manager of the John Thompson Group trailer division's Durham works. Peter Lewis has been appointed divisional chief accountant by the John Thompson Ltd. board. Mr. Lewis was previously chief accountant at the Tipton company of the Thompson Horseley division of the Group. Bruce Whitelaw and Hubert Jenkins have been appointed as overseas trade executives by the SMMT. Mr. Whitelaw, formerly with Guthrie and Co. Ltd. in Singapore, will have special responsibilities for the Far East and Australasia. Mr, Jenkins. who has been nianager for Ireland for the English Electric Co. Ltd. and was formerly head of sales and contracts in Spain for English Electric, will have special responsibility for Latin America and the Caribbean.

T. S. Ross (Ross Transport Ltd., Cardiff) has been elected chairman of the South Wales Maintenance Committee for Goods Vehicles. J. R. Elliott (Alcan Industries Ltd.) is vice-chairman L. Owens secretary. Archie Green, formerly sales director, has been appointed marketing director of Samuel Williams and Sons Ltd.. Dagenham—the major subsidiary of the Williams Hudson Group. Mr. Green will be responsible for the overall marketing policies for the company's shipping and storage, bulk liquids and transport operations and the compilation of forward selling programmes. His marketing manager is Paul R. Anderson, 34, previously sales manager of the shipping and storage division. Mr. Anderson's position in the S. and S. division has been taken by his former deputy, Donald A. Hunt, 33.

John Hardman-Grant has been appointed to the board of Highway Trailers (Great Britain) Ltd. as director and general manager, Mr. Herdman-Grant joined Highway in 1985 as general sales manager, being appointed general marketing manager in 1967; in 1968 he was also appointed acting general manager.

Tom Collins, 49, has been appointed Cardiff depot manager of National Carriers Ltd. Mr. Collins has been Exeter depot manager since 1967. Jack Rimington, 62. depot manager at Huddersfield. has been appointed Halifax depot manager.

G. L Smith, general manager of Leigh Corporation Transport, is retiring after a 51-year working life. Mr. Smith's first job was as a tramways points boy with the South Lancashire Tramways Co.
