Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

SCANIA'S EURO-5 engines will appear this year, but operators hoping for a two-pedal Opticruise transmission will have to wait.

HasseJohansson, group vice-president responsible for R&D, says the all-EGR XPI engine range will be launched at a "major event"; we expect this to be the RAI Show in Amsterdam in October.

Johansson confirms that Scania's Euro-6 offering, likely to be ready in 2009, will require both EGA and SCR technology, and that development of the revolutionary HCCI (Homogenous Charge Compression Ignition) engine is on track. A six-cylinder prototype is approaching readiness for vehicle installation. Combining a spark-ignition-type induction system with compression ignition, HCCI presents major electronic challenges regarding combustion control. Even the type of fuel is still being investigated — current tests are using alcohol and petrol.

Johansson predicts outputs of up to 800hp within 10 years, the 4,000Nm of torque this would entail is well beyond the scope of current transmissions. Clutchless Opticrui se transmissions will join the three-pedal version in due course, but not this year.

Extensions to the Scania range are likely, but they are likely to target niche markets such as heavy-duty mining tippers. There will be 110 move below the current 16-tonne entry level, nor will there be any rebadged third-party products. What isn't ruled out, however, is an extension of the existing deal in which Scania markets smaller products from its partner Hino in South Korea.
