Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• NFC division Exel Logistics was hit this week by the loss of two prestigious contracts — its Masterspeed dedicated Marks & Spencer operation, and the Financial Times distribution operation.

Masterspeed was set up three years ago to provide a dedicated furniture delivery service for Marks & Spencer customers throughout the UK and Ireland.

'The contract expired and it went out to tender, but NFC was unsuccessful. All steps will be made to re-deploy staff over the next six months as the contract terminates in August," says the company.

Masterspeed is based in Ilkley and uses other distribu tion centres in Bracknell, Bristol, Middleton and Falkirk. Around 90 people work under the Masterspeed banner although the firm refuses to comment on projected redundancy numbers. Hays Specialist Distribution is believed to have won the northern distribution contract for M&S furniture.

TNT Newsfast has clinched a deal with the Financial Times, which previously used Exel's Newsflow service.

NFL says: "This lost contract was worth less than 2% of Newsflow's daily carried newspaper volumes. Newsflow still carries the lion's share of daily and Sunday national newspapers. We only had one vehicle dedicated to the Financial Times livery, and the impact on the staff will be minimal, as there are no redundancies."

TNT says its new contract will create around 30 jobs, and a dedicated fleet of 25 vehicles has been formed to handle the three-year deal.
