REFRIGERATED tanks for bulk collection of milk are now being installed on farms at the rate of about 50 a month. This was said in London " on Tuesday by Mr. J. Hutchinson, head of the bulk milk collection department, Milk Marketing Board.

Telling a milk producers' conference about the future of bulk milk collection, Mr. Hutchinson said that of the 1,500 refrigerated tanks now on farms in England and Wales, most had been installed during the last two years, and in this period tanks had been installed at an average rate of about 50 a month. There were 48 schemes in operation, and 21 new ones were planned for the first half of 1963. A total of 128 road tankers operating on 171 collection routes collected 226,000 gallons of bulk milk daily in December, 1962, or four per cent of all daily supplies.

" Bulk collection finds favour with all the parties concerned," he said. In discussing the economics of hulk milk collection, Mr. Hutchinson emphasized that the cost of the farm tank was the factor which lent itself most of all towards reductions in costs. He said that the purchase of farm tanks by groups of producers has enabled larger discounts to be obtained.

Mr. Hutchinson concluded by .saying that there could be no .doubt that the exfarm bulk collection of milk could, if fully, exploited, streamline the flow of milk from farm to market considerably. On Wednesday the chairman of the R.H.A. Milk Carriers Functional Group congratulated members and drivers on their successful collection and delivery of milk in spite of appalling weather.
