Having been with the enforcement agency since 2004, Tetlow will leave in January to become chief executive of the Institute of Mechanical Engineers (I MechE).
Speaking exclusively to CM, he says: "We have reduced testing time by 18 minutes and also invested £47m to rebuild 10 testing stations. And, for the first time ever, we have all the trade associations on our side."
Strategy and performance director Alistair Peoples will stand in for Tetlow until a replacement can be appointed.
