Mlle article 'Austrian eco1 tags are hard to grasp" in CM 4-10 December was somewhat misleading. It is true that from 1 January 1998 the ecopoint system for trucks crossing Austria will be predomi

nantly electronic but about 5°. of total trips by ELI hauliers will still he permitted using the existing paper ecopoints.

Furthermore. the European Commission has distributed the paper ecopoints primarily to the countries making the fewest transit journeys through Austria (on the basis that their hauliers shouldn't have to buy ecotags at around IMO each for occasional journeys through Austria).

Thus all British and Irish ecopoints for 1998 will continue to be in the form of paper stamps. I hope that none of your readers has been unduly alarmed into thinking that they have to buy electronic ecotags as this is not the case.
