THE first national traffic census arranged by the Ministry of Transport since 1938 is taking place this week, It started last Monday and ends on Sunday. Its purpose is to determine the growth and trend of modern traffic, and particularly the changes which may have occurred in the general traffic pattern since the war.

Before the war, traffic counts were taken at three-year intervals at some 5,000 points on Class 1 and about 4,000 pointson Class IT roads alternately. This week's census is restricted to 270 points as widely distributed as possible on trunk, Class I and Class II roads.

NEW HANDBOOK ON BIRMINGHAM

A .DESCRIPTION of the growth or Pi Birmingham's municipal transport undertaking, second largest in the country, is contained in " City of Birmingham Handbook," published at 2s, 6d. by the city's information department.

The book will mainly appeal to students of local government. Birmingham's civic activities are wide and each is described in some detail, including the refuse-collection, fire and ambulance services.

Some information is also given on the tram-conversion programme, by which it is intended that all trams and trolleyb uses will be replaced by motorbuses by 1953.
