Genital Transport Co. Lid., and Sunderland Corporation over the operation of services to new estates growing rapidly on the outskirts of the borough, ended in a compromise in Newcastle, last week. Both applied for permission to run services to the corporation's largest housing estate at Pennywell. and the Northern Licensing Authority ruled that both undertakings should be allowed to operate in the area.

Pennywell will eventually house a population of 12,000, of whom 7,000 are already living on the estate.

The .Authority, Mr. S. W. Nelson, pointed out that as the Northern General had been operating in the Pennywell area since 1921, he would not reject its application outright, and it seemed reasonable that as the corporation ran buses into the fringes of the estate, both parties should share the services.

"The more services the public can enjoy without unnecessary duplication, the better," he added.

The Licensing Authority also granted Sunderland Corporation a licence to operate a bus service between the town centre and Ville:1.e Road. It will replace the existing tram service—the first in Sunderland to be abandoned in favour of buses 7 Told by the town clerk of Sunderland, Mr. G. S. McIntire, that the municipality had difficulty in obtaining new vehicles, Mr. Nelson said that he hoped the corporation would contact the Authority if it experienced any further problem in securing buses to implement its policy of eventually operating buses on all routes at present served by trams.
