The Company Claims Credit for Opening up, This Area FOLLOWING the appeals made by .Green Line Coaches, Ltd., in respect of coach services linking the centre of London with outlying towns on the south-west side, a report of the hearing of which appeared in our issue for last week, four appeals by the London General Omnibus Co., Ltd., which, of course, is allied to Green Line Coaches, Ltd., were heard at the Ministry of Transport a few days ago.

These appeals were in respect of motorbus services in the Slough and Windsor districts, concerning which adverse decisions had been announced by the Southern Area Traffic Commis sioners. The first two appeals were against the refusal of the Commissioners to allow the compel:1y to rim buses on the Windsor-Slough section of services operating between Hounslow and Slough and between Uxbridge and Windsor. The other two appeals related to a decisionof • the Commissioners not to permit an adjustment of services on the Uxbridge-Windsor and HounslowWindsor routes. An objection had been lodged by the Southern Railway Co., which company, however, was not represented at the hearing. ''• An argument put forward on behalf of the appellant company related to congestion on the Slough section of the Windsor-Slough route, it being stated that, from figures which were taken on June 11th, ie appeared that out of 752 motorbuses passing between Windsor and Slough only 149 belonged to the L.G.O.C. In support of these figures it was claimed that the L.G.O.C. service bad been a regular one, whereas services operated by competitors were introduced only for the cream Of the traffic. The company went so far as to claim that it had played a large part in the opening up of•the Windsor and Slough area.

With regard to certain announcements in the daily Press to the effect that the L.G.O.C. has had to remove 100 buses from the London streets, by way of an economy measure, readers should note that this is somewhat misleading, the fact of the matter being that the ordinary seasonal dismissal of temporary drivers and conductors, taken on for the summer period,. is taking place, as it has done in past years, the total reduction' in journeys amounting to, roughly, the equivalent of the removal of 100 buses. The adjustment is taking place a little earlier this year than is usual.
