Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

A NEW starter lockout, claimed to give complete protection to most types of starter installation, has been developed by Butec Electrics, a member of the SU Butec group of companies.

Known as the TSL-2, it is a solid-state device designed to prevent the engagement of the starter when either the starter pinion or the engine is rotating. Butec says that this problem is highlighted on mid and rear-engined vehicles where it is not easy to protect a slow running engine while the vehicle is stationary.

If the starter is energised under this condition, damage to both starter and engine is inevitable.

The TSL-2 may be employed with most types of 24v starter and nine diode self-excited alternators.

Comprised of the TSL-2 lockout unit and an associated lockout relay, the system is claimed to give complete protection to starter installations by introducing an inhibited period to the starter control circuit by means of an electronic timer coupled to the alternator and starter motor.

The components are fixed to a printed circuit board and assembled into a plastic flame-retardant case.

Factory adjusted, the TSL-2 requires no maintenance and existing starter installations are easily modified to incorporate the unit.
