FFOR OR many types of transport work —heavy haulage for example—the articulated vehiple is the only type that can _be employed, and in other kinds of activity—notably the operation of shuttle services—the tractortrailer outfit scores over the normal rigid lorry or van. Artificial legal restrictions in this country have tended to limit the extent to which trailers and semi-trailers can be used, but overseas their employment is often wider.

British manufacturers have thus been encouraged, in krather Irish fashion, to give special attention to the export. market.

Models are not only built for all capacities, from a few hundredweight up to 200 tons, but also for the exacting requirements of transport users in certain industries. Evidence of makers' endeavours will be apparent at the Commercial Motor Show. at Faris Court.

Apart from the trailers and semi. trailers built for general haulage, there will be a number of special vehicles.. The British Trailer Co., Ltd., will show on Stand 124 a transportable dispensary cabin for construction or oilfield-drilling camps. The upper ramps can be lowered for ground-level loading and then raised so that cars may take position on the lower deck, hYdraulic rams driven by a power takeoff from the gearbox of the Austin tractor being provided for this movement.

Maximum Length Obtained

In motion, the upper deck is secured by drop pins and the cars are anchored by chains attached to small winches with ratchets. Use of Carrimore retractor-type turntable gear enables a semi-trailer of maximum legal length to he built. When cars are driven into position, their doors can be opened so that the drivers may alight.
