Optimism levels fell back to spring levels in September, reaching a score of 44 — the same as and the lowest score since March.

Of the respondents, 72% were either very optimistic or fairly optimistic about their firm's prospects over the next year, while 43% were either not very optimistic or not at all optimistic.

Own-account operators were the most positive and also more positive than they were in August: their optimistic/not optimistic split improved from 85/14 to 92/8. Logistics and contract distribution firms were almost as positive and were also more positive than they were in August: their split improved from 80/20 to 89/11.

Hire or reward hauliers had it tough: their split fell from 78/22 to 56/45.
