The railway companies will be fully occupied at the Leeds sitting of the Yorkshire Commissioners, opening November 24th, with objections to licence applications of all classes by independent operators. Gazette No. 30 gives a list of licence decisions, including refusals in respect of three stage and two express services, also one group of excursions and tours. It also announces 18 withdrawals.

Gazette No. 27 of the NorthWestern Area announces the granting to Darwen Corporation of permission, under Sections 101 and 102 of the Road Traffic Act, 1930, to operate publicservice vehicles (subject to the granting of a road-service licence under Section 72). on a route outside of Darwen. It also announces the refusal, under the same Sections, of permission to Chester Corporation to operate services on the circular route. Refusals of eight licences are also indicated.

Persistent railway opposition is levelled at excursion and other applications coming up before the West Midland Commissioners at the Hanley meeting this week and next. Gazette No. 33 announces about a dozen licence refusals. Six appeal decisions are given, all being unfavourable to the appellants.

Mainly independent operators are being heard at the November 23rd sitting of the East Midland Commissioners. Gazette No. 35 announces the Minister's decision to make an Order an the Commissioners in the appeal of the Midland "Red" company, altering the conditions as regards picking up passengers in Leicester.

To-day's sitting of the South Wales Commissioners, at Pontypridd, is mainly occupied by unopposed applications in respect of stage services and tours, many of the former class comprising workmen's services, which, in South Wales, are numerous.

At the Bristol sitting of the Western Commissioners (November 26th) the G.W.R. Co. will oppose Liverpool. London express-service applications by the Crosville concern.

Gazette No. 25 lists standard conditions for the area concerning express, stage and excursion licences.

Gazette No. 34 for the Southern Area announces the Minister's unfavourable decision in the appeal of Three Counties Motors, of Bourton, Dorset.

This week's sitting of the SouthEastern Commissioners, at Margate, affords a remarkable instance of the difficult time independent operators are having against associated companies and railways. Almost all their express applications are opposed by the railways and all their stage-service applications by the big associated companies. For example, Mr. F, A. Plin, of the M.T. Co., London, chairman of the Road Services Fares Tribunal which is assisting the Traffic Commissioners, is opposed in respect of his express service between London and Thanet (via

Maidstone) by the Maidstone and District, East Kent, Green Line, L.G.O.C., Southern Railway and other concerns, including local authorities. Gazette No. 35 announces the Minister's dismissal of an appeal by East Grinstead Motor Coaches against the Commissioners' refusal to licence an express service between East Grinstead and Brighton. It gives also a list of 25 appeals withdrawn by operators.

The only objector to the Green Line Parningham-London application, which is to be heard by the Metropolitan Commissioner on November 23rd, is, so far, the Southern Railway. Other Green Line applications next week will be opposed by independent operators, whose applications, in turn, are faced with objections by Green Line Coaches, Ltd. In fact, the main business of the week will constitute a struggle between the Green Line and the other operators. Gazette No. 35 announces two appeal dismissals.
