tororite Ai1/401('114 • With Commercial Motor's Wheel Loss Fund still growing (helped by a generous £250 from Sheffield-based operator Mark W Kellett) readers continue to contact Commercial Motor with their wheel loss experiences. More research, and more cash is needed to pin down the final answers to wheel loss, but CM readers are certainly coming up with some useful data.

The high frequency of nearside wheel loss has been mentioned by many operators. Technical consultant Fritz Liebreich claims that in his experience more than 95% of losses are from the nearside. He believes that using left-hand threads on nearside wheel studs is an essential first step.

Terry Harris and Brian John son run Aspect Wheels of Uxbridge, Middx. As compiler of an authoritative guide to wheel selection, Johnson knows more than most about HGV wheels. He points out that there are no less than 98 variations of the most popular 11R22.5 truck wheel, with over a dozen makes in circulation.

Many cases of wheel loss, he believes, are caused because operators, even tyre specialists, are unknowingly fitting incorrect equipment.

Chassis manufacturers specify the shape, offset tolerance and type of wheel fixing, but while there are European and British standards for the wheel rim there is no European norm as regards the shape of the centre disc, and more particularly the disc's inner profile.
