Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• During the year ended December 31, 1967, the profit of Lancashire United Transport Ltd. was £208,095, compared with £199,372 for the previous year. This was revealed by Mr. Robert Cary, chairman, in his statement to the a.gm. of the company in Manchester recently.

The net profit after taxation was £174,595 against £137,350 in 1966, the lower tax in 1967 being caused by the higher than usual intake of new vehicles (49 new buses were purchased compared with the normal intake of 30). The fleet now comprised some 400 buses which covered nearly 13 million miles in 1967.

Mr. Cary reported that the company had on order 20 Bristol and three AEC Swift rear-engined buses which would be fitted with Alexander bodies. It was expected that these buses, due to be delivered about the turn of the year, would qualify for the new bus grant of 25 per cent as they were designed for one-man operation.

The number of passengers carried in 1967 fell by 4.5 per cent compared with a fall of 6.7 per cent in 1966. It was hoped that the decline in the volume of traffic in recent years would not be so marked in the future, stated Mr. Cary.
