• Testing of certain goods vehicles used for the transport of dangerous goods to the Continent will begin on June 4.

The European Agreement concerning the International Carriage of Dangerous Goods by Road (ADR), which came into force on January 29, provides for the examination and certification of tank vehicles used for the carriage of dangerous goods, and certain explosives-carrying vehicles. The contracting parties to the Agreement will accept a valid ADR certificate as evidence of compliance with Annexes A and B of the Agreement, due to come into force on July 29.

The annexes provide for the vehicles concerned to be inspected in their country ol registration to ensure that they conforrr to the provisions of the Agreement and to tin regulations on general safety (such as braka and lighting) in force in their country of origin At present there are five contracting parties—Belgium, France, Italy, the Netherlands and Portugal—and ratification In. the UK is expected shortly.

Relatively few vehicles in this count* are likely to be subjected to this examinatior which—in the case of the vehicle itself— will be carried out by MoT examiners al h.g.v. testing stations. Home Office inspec tors will examine tanks.
