Mr. McCarthy, the Australian manager for Leyland Motors, Ltd., recently arrived in this country, and will spend a considerable portion of his leave at the company's headquarters in Lancashire.

Last week we referred briefly to the fact that Major R. A. B. Smith, MC., A.C.G.I., A.M.I.C.E., had just been elected president of the Commercial Motor Users Association. Major Smith became a member of the National • Council in 1928, and vice-chairman in 1933. He was trained as a civil engineer, and then worked for the Colonial Government in West Africa, this including the construction of two large darns with their contingent transport problems. Later he became chief engineer and member of the council of the British Portland Cement Association, and is the author of what is regarded as the standard work on con orete road construction. He has made a most comprehensive study of roadtransport questions both in America and on the Continent, and, in 1927, presented a valuable paper to the World Road Transport Congress.

On the council of the C.M.U.A. he flag represented the Cement Marketing Co., Ltd., which has extensive roadtransport interests.

Bournemouth Corporation has appointed Mr. D. P. Morrison, Hull Corporation's transport manager, as general manager of the transport department, in succession to Mr. I. Bulfin, Mr. N. M. Pilling has been re-elected chairman of Yorkshire Motor Coach Owners, Ltd., and Mr. J. T. Steele, vice-chairman. Mr. J. W. Moseley, of Barnsley, and Mr. R. Barr, of Leeds, have been added to the directorate.

Mr. V. W. Pilkington, the manager of the engineering department of Leyland Motors, Ltd., who has been on a health cruise to South Africa, combined business with pleasure and, during his stay, read a number of papers. He left for this country on May 14.

Mr. Joseph Farndale, C.B.E., chairman of the Yorkshire Traffic Commissioners, is one of the northern recipients of the King's Silver Jubilee Medal, which has been struck as a personal souvenir from His Majesty, for distribution to persons in the Crown service and others.

Councillor A. L. Chown, chairman of Northampton Transport Committee, will be among the Northampton delegates to the conference of the Municipal Tramways and Transport Association, at Douglas, Isle of Man, from June 26-28. Mr. J. F. Cameron, general manager of the Northampton undertaking, is this year's president of the Association.

Mr, T, H, Burrows, of Messrs. T. Burrows and Sons, Wombwell, near Barnsley, one of the oldest coach and bus-operating concerns in Yorkshire, has been re-elected chairman of the Yorkshire Stage Carriage Operators Association. Mr. Burrows, who has held this position almost since the inception of the Y.S.C.O.A. three years ago, is also chairman of the Barnsley and Doncaster area of the Commercial Motor Users Association. he has taken an active interest in various trade associations for the past 21 years.

Mr. Joseph Keeling has been elected vice-chairman of the Y.S.C.O.A. Mr. Keeling became connected with the Association last year, as a result of the amalgamation with the Yorkshire Coach and Transport Association. Formerly he was connected with Yorkshire Motor Coach Owners, Ltd.
