Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

EVER BEEN DRIVING down a road and couldn’t make out the road markings? According to a survey by the Road Safety Marking Association (RSMA) more than 60 singlecarriageway A-roads, totalling more than 1,000 miles, have, on average, 14% of road markings completely worn out.

The worst offender is a fivemile section of the A6135 in South Yorkshire where 75% of the markings are barely visible. Close behind are the A645 in Yorkshire and Humberside and the A509 in Northants.

The best roads for marking visibility were the A303 dual carriageway, the East Midlands’ A1133 and the A63 between Leeds and Hull.

Among motorways, the M65 has the best visibility, while the M61 ranks last.

George Lee, national director of the RSMA, says: “Road markings provide the best, most simple navigation aid to drivers. Without this most modest of investments, motorists are driving blind.”
