Thornycroft Refuse Collectors for Westminster.

An order for three 13-cubic-yd. boxtype refuse collectors is nowbeing" executed by John I. Thornyeroft and Co., Ltd., Basingstoke, for Westminster City Council. It is expected that the vehicles will be ready for delivery in about three weeks.

They have a new type at steel body, made by the Eagle Engineering Co., Ltd., Warwick, built for end loading and equipped with hinged tailboards and end curtains. A sliding partition is provided, which has an ingenious mechanism to adapt it to the varying width of the body, which is 7 ft. wide at the rear, 6 ft. 6 ins, wide at the front, 14 ft. 6 ing, long, and has a three-section sliding roof. The chassis are type .AA, forward control, low-loading 2tonners, with a 13-ft. 4-in, wheelbase and 27-m. by 6-in, pneumatic tyres.

Road Transport Offers Better Service at Lower Cost.

Southall-Norwood Urban District Council's surveyor recently stated, following the reception of a letter from the local goods agent of the Great Western Railway Co. as to the conveyance of materials by rail, that ex perience showed that road delivery to the depot or sites in the district was more efficient than rail transport. Moreover, the prices quoted for material at the station were greater than those for the same goods delivered on the site.

Refuse Collectors Wanted by Cape Town.

His Majesty's Senior Trade Commissioner in South Africa reports that the City of Cape Town is inviting tenders for the supply of two 2i-3-ton refuse-collection lorries of not less than 7 cubic yds. capacity. Tenders have to be addressed to the town clerk, City Hall, Cape Town, and must be received by noon on April 12. In a statement on the Salter Report, the Rural District Councils Association points out that consideration must be given to the benefits which bare accrued to rural England from road transport, and suggests that nothing should be done that might create a transport monopoly.

The association mentions the loss to traders and the wear on country roads resulting from the use of unnecessarily large vehicles for small loads for delivery to villages. This practice is said to be not unusual amongst provincial traders. It is felt that many of the rural roads are not suitable for large vehicles, and that efforts should be made to keep such traffic to a minimum.
