The probable effect of Government interference in the fixing of road-transport rates was mentioned by Mr. F. W. Halsall, secretary of the Universal Transport Co. (Scotland), Ltd., in a lecture to the Scottish branch of the Industrial Transport Association, in Glasgow.

Speaking on " Road Transport -Problems Ahead," Mr. Halsall said that the supply of road-transport services or vehicles was decreasing and would continue to drop. From the industry's point of view, that was an advantage, as it meant the gradual elimination of the inefficient contractor, and, incidentally, the rate-cutter. As time went on, the value of licences would increase.

The problem of economic rates must be settled quickly by the industry itself, otherwise rates might be fixed by the Government, with more harmful than helpful effect.
