Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

A free council truckstop is being

upgraded — but from now on

operators will have to pay for the

privilege. Guy Sheppard reports.

OPERATORS ARE to be :barged 15 a night to use a free truck park after councillors handed over control to a local business.

The 20-space park next to the rattle market in Market Drayton, Shropshire, is to get £25000 worth uf improvements including showers, CCTV, secure fencing and automatic access control.

But operators, who have been using the site free of charge for some years, see the investment by Barbers Auctioneers as a mixed blessing.

Danny Poole, MD of DWP International in Stoke-on-Trent. says:"They know that lorries have to park somewhere so it is just a way to make money.

"This industry pays enough one way or another but I suppose a £5a-night charge is better than at motorway service stations."

Nicholas Jack. transport manager of wholesale fish merchants G&J Jack in Fraserburgh, Aberdeenshire, says: "I think it is a disgrace that in Britain you have to pay for secure parking when on the Continent it is free."

Bernie Hutchison, area MD of Barbers, which runs the neigh bouring cattle market, says the existing toilet block on the truck park is plagued by vandalism.

"We have exclusive rights to the site on Wednesdays anyway and we were fed up with it being smashed up by gypsies," he says.

He adds that in future drivers will need a swipe card, costing £10, or a personal identification number to gain access. These can be obtained by phoning 01630652314.

North Shropshire District Council, which owns the site, says it is handing over control for a 12month trial period.
