• Owner-drivers could be offered financial advice and discounted diesel as incentives to join the Transport & General Workers Union, if a shopping list of proposals drawn up by a union official are accepted.
Dave Bolton, commercial trade group secretary for the northern group, says that the union's size gives the TGWU the bulk buying power it needs to win discounts for owner-drivers from suppliers of tyres, insurance and maintenance. He is about to submit his proposals on a discussion paper to other union bosses.
