Rugeley Depot, Winner of Walker Cup, Taken Over by Sunley Transport

RUGELEY depot of British Road Services has been purchased by Sunley Transport (Stafford), Ltd., a subsidiary of Bernard Sunley and Sons, Ltd. Fifty vehicles are involved in the transfer, which is the largest so far made in the Midlands. The company are reported to intend to buy depots in other parts of the country.

The depot staff were the outright winners of the Walker Cup for efficiency. No staff redundancy has been occasioned. Seventy-five men have transferred to private enterprise, but 12 chose to remain with B.R.S. and have been transferred to work at premises in Stafford.

The new owners are to concentrate on the long-distance haulage of general goods and machinery. They already. operate an extensive milk-collection service for a number of Birmingham dairies.

The formation of Sunley Transport, (Stafford), Ltd., is reported here. One of the directors is Sir Gurney Braithwaite, former Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Transport.

NORTHERN AREA Three vehicles and a container, bought by Messrs. G. Smart and J. S. Cardella, 4 Baltic Chambers, Quayside, Newcastle upon Tyne. have been assigned: one (6 tons 19 cwt.) to Mr. W. Richardson, 49 Forest Hall Road, Forest Hall; one (7 tons 13 cwt.) to P. G. Walton, Ltd., Back Chandless Street, Gateshead; and one (2 tons 19 cwt.) and a container (11 tons) to Mr. E. N. Craik, 85 Morrison Street, Gateshead.

One of five lorries (16 tons 14 cwt.) purchased by Mr. B. Mandale, The Garage, Greystoke, has been transferred to Mr. W. E. Crosthwaite (J. W. Hodgson Trans

port), 209 Blackwell Road, Carlisle. It has an unladen weight of 3 tons.

Another assignment is that of one vehicle (3 tons 6 cwt.) to Mr. A. N. Oliver, 40 Larch Street, Newcastle urion Tyne. by H. W. Capstaff, Ltd., Little Benton, Newcastle upon Tyne.

Mr. T. R. Handley, The Yews, Crosby Garrett, has bought another vehicle (7 tons 7 cwt.).

c20 NORTH-WEST A vehicle trailer (8 tons) bought by Cusick (Oldham), Ltd., 282 Frederick Street, Oldham, has been assigned to Wm. Smith (Hollinwood), Ltd., Albert Mills, Hollinwood, Oldham.

Another assignment is that of four articulated vehicles (20 tons) to Mr. F. B. Ford, Porlock, Chester Road, Bramhall, by Mr. T. H. Prince, 44 Arpley Street, Warrington.

Mr. L. Gleave, Holly Bank, Audlcm, has assigned one vehicle (5 tons) to Messrs. C. and K. Miller, Stocks Garage, Wheelion, near Charley, who have in turn transferred It to Mr. H. Turner, Snaylam Farm, Much Hook, near Preston.

Nineteen vehicles and three trailers (894 tons) have been acquired by Mr. T. H. Titchener, 41 Cocker Street, Blackpool, and assigned to the following: Titchener and Brown (1954), Ltd.. 41 Cocker Street, Blackpool, 12 vehicles and three trailers (561tons); and Mr. II. Hague, Howick house, Junction Lane, Burscough, seven vehicles (33 tons).

' YORKSHIRE

Mr. W. Storey, of Ackworth, is again prominent as a buyer in the latest list of acquisitions in Yorkshire, with a purchase 'of 12 vehicles, including five articulated. All have been assigned as follows: One vehicle each to Mr. R. Robinson, 22 Palmer Road, Sheffield ; Woodscats Transport Co., Ltd.. Albert Road Garage, Sheffield : G. Farnshaw, Ltd., Blaxton, near Doncaster ; Mr. T. Smith, 149 Trap Lane, Sheffield, 11; and Notts and Lines Transport Co., Colwick Road, Nottingham. Two have gone to Murphy Bros., Ltd., Melton Road,. Syston, Leicester. The articulated vehicles have been disposed of to the following: One to Savile Transport Co., Parsonage Garage. Mickletown, near Leeds; one to Messrs. F. and H. Tinker, Thorpe Lane, Tingley, near Wakefield; two to J. H. Tait Transport (York). Ltd„ Beechlands, York ; and one to L. Senior, Ltd:, Stonegate Road, Leeds, 7.

Mr. B. T. Weaver. :38 Barnsley Road, South Elmsall, has bought two vehicles. which he has assigned. one to B.C.F. Transport Co.. Ltd., Water Lane, Leeds, and the other to Rycroft Transport Service Co., Ltd., Fairfield Garage, Hoyland Common. near Barnsley.

An A.E.C. eight-wheeler, based at Sheffield, has been taken over by Messrs. Ross Garage, 112 Bute Street, Cardiff. It will

be operated, together with other special A licence vehicles purchased earlier in the year, on a night trunk service between Sheffield and South Wales. Mr. N. Ross, who is to manage the Sheffield end of the business, has taken up residence in the area.

A first purchaser is Mr. Charlie Clifton, Old Gasworks, Gringley on the Hill, near Doncaster. He has taken over one vehicle from Mr. H. G. Powell, West End Garage, Scotter, near Gainsborough.

WEST MIDLANDS

Smiley Transport, Ltd.. have purchased the Rugeley depot of B.R.S.. together with 50 vehicles. Before nationalization, when 98 vehicles were taken over, the depot was owned by Ralph Gee and Sons, Ltd.

Red House Garage Co., Ltd., Cromwell Street, Coventry, have purchased for their Midland depot two Scammell 20-ton articulated vehicles. an A.E.C. Matador 25-ton tractor-trailer outfit and a Scammell 45-ton low-loader.

Following their return to the transport industry after being nationalized in 1949, George Rhodes (Transport), Ltd., 4 King Street, Biddulph. have bought four B.R.S. lorries—an Atkinson and a Maudslay sixwheeler and two Maudslay 7-8-tonners. During the intervening years, vehicles have been operated on contracts under the name or Messrs. George Rhodes and Sons. .

Four Vulcan 6-ton tippers with special A licences recently purchased by Messrs. Cartwright and Sons, 123 High Street. Humblecote, Stourbridge. will be used on general work in conjunction with the existing tipper fleet.

Hay, straw and corn are carried in two Thornycroft 6-tonners purchased by Messrs. W. J. Matthews and Son. Bell Bank. Wetford-on-Avon. Hay is carried to Wales, straw to Midland centres and corn to Liverpool. Thevehicles have been added to a fleet of. two Morris-Commercial 5-tonners and a Thornyeroft 5-tonner.

• A first purchaser is Mr. W. I. R. Gwilt, Marton House Farm, Baschurch, who has bought three Thames 5-6-tonners which will be operated on general haulage, work.

Other purchasers are R. Davies (Midland Transport), Ltd., 11 St. Mark's Road, .Smethwick, who has acquired four vehicles (12 tons), and S. Jones (Aldridge), Ltd., Walsall Wood Road, Aldridge, four vehicles (28 tons).

The West Midlands Licensing Authority has granted special A licences to the following: S. Llewellyn and Son, Ltd., Station Road, Ross-on-Wye, for one vehicle (51 tons); Mr. G. D. Allen, Sunny Brae, Checkley, Team one (41 tons); Allenways, Ltd.. 580 Moseley Road. Birmingham. one (4i tons); Messrs. L. D. Steele and S. Layton, 103 High Road, Lane Head. Willenhall. one (3 tons); Messrs. G. B. Oliver and R. Richmond (Olrich Transport), 15 Grove Street. Cobridge, one (31 tons); Messrs. W. J. Butler and Simms (W. J. Butler Transport). 23 Studley Street, Birmingham. one (3 tons); Mr. J. G. Williams, Old Brewery Warehouse, Weston Rhyn, Oswestry, one (3 tons); A. Fletcher and Co., Ltd., 167 King Street, one (81 tons): Mr. W. E. Dulson, Round Thorn, Whixall. Whitchurch, Salop, one vehicle (5 tons) and container (2 tons); Mr. H. S. Williams, Hill Garage, Whitchurch, Hereford, one (81 tons); and Robert Wynn and Sons, Ltd., 50 Shaftesbury Street. Newport, Mon, one vehicle (11, tons) and a trailer.

EAST MIDLANDS

Atlas Express Co., Ltd., Slatefield Street, Glasgow, E.1, who have previously tnade purchases in the London area and the north-west, have now taken over six vehicles (17i tons) based at Nottingham.

Other repeat purchases are: Messrs. Hill's Transport, Lake Terrace. Leicester Road, Melton Mowbray, who have three vehicles (13 tons 17 cwt.); Hamblin's Suppliers, Ltd., 498 Melton Road. Leicester, one (3 tons) assigned by Mr. J. Brindley. The Close, Sharnford, Hinckley; and Messrs. J. E. and L. Staniland, Mill House,

TWO MORE BIG UNITS SOLD

TWO more big units in the special Scottish list have been sold. They include 140 vehicles.

Eleven units (246 vehicles), out of 47 untts (1,264 vehicles) offered, have been sold. There were no bids for 17 units (435 vehicles) and all tenders were rejected for 19 units (583 vehicles).

WESTERN AREA

Messrs. A. Gregory and Son, 17 Toronto Road, Exeter, Devon, have acquired one vehicle (3 tons) in their first purchase,

Mr. R. Read, Greystones, Lorighope, has bought four vehicles (20 tons 12 cwt.) from Mr. G. Read, Cuckoo Patch, Mitcheldean. One vehicle (2 tons 9 cwt.) has been assigned to Messrs. W. J. G. Downton and Son, 35 Kenmore Road, Knowle. by S. Ball and Son (Transport), Ltd., Chipping Sodbury.

LONDON AND HOME COUNTIES

Two more vehicles (9 tons) and two trailers have been bought by Graham Adams, Ltd., Transport Wharf, Dickerage Lane,. New Malden.

Repeat purchases have been made also , by Home Counties Plant Hire, Ltd, `s, Pegasus Works, Roebuck Road, Ilford, of six vehicles (19 tons 13 cwt.); and Mr. S. H. Laker, Cap-Frehel, Kingsmead Road, High Wycombe, one (2 tons 7 cwt.).

Three vehicles (12 tons 1 cwt.) have been made over to Davis Bros. (Haulage), Ltd., 123 Solebay Street. London, E.3, by Mr. G. Brown, 115 Goldsmith Road, London, E.2. Mr. Brown has also sold a vehicle (3'1. tons) to Mr. A. Dowell, Queensmere, Arterial Road, Basildon.

One vehicle (2., tons) of two purchased by Mr. D. Harkness. 36 Collyer Road, 'London Colney, Hens, has been transferred to Mr. W. Mardell, Southern Cross Garages, Barnet By-pass. North Mimms, London and Carfax Contract Services, Ltd., 38 Great St. Helens, London, E.C.3, have taken over one vehicle (3 tons 6 cwt.) from Messrs. Edwards and -Wilson, Brynhilda, Boundary Road, Greyshott, Hindhead.

The Metropolitan Licensing Authority has granted special A licences to Messrs. G. A and G. Sinficld, 81 Abbey Wood Road. London, S.E.2, for The vehicles (15 tons 11 cwt.); Messrs. ,Mason Bros., 12 Roger Street, London, W.C.1, three vehicles (8 tons 16 cwt.) and -threetrailers; and Messrs. L. E. and G. H. Mayes, 41 Ash Road, London. E:15, two (6 tons 17 cwt.).
