HAULIERS ON THE lookout for a cheap base have a new destination to consider.

The licensing authorities on the Mediterranean island of Cyprus have just granted approval for a German haulage firm to register 10 of its trucks there.

In the spring of 2005, Spedition Kobernuss, of Uelzen, north-east of Hanover, established a Cyprus-based company which will specialise in cost-effective transEU road transport.

Kobernuss has already hired 11 Cypriot drivers for its new 'outstation', which is being operated in addition to its 90-truck fleet based in Germany.

Boss Hubertus Kobernuss has intimated that several other German hauliers will be following his example, which allows him to gain impressive savings for each Cyprusregistered vehicle. In addition to the lower cost of labour, there are savings to be made in administration and taxation.

• Construction has begun on a €10m logistics centre to handle pan-European

distribution of spare parts and accessories for MAN service points, workshops and operators.

It will be based at Neufahrn, 12km west of Munich Airport.

According to the Bavarian Ministry of Trade, Transport and Technology, the development will create 120 jobs.

The logistics centre is due to open next February; it will be run by the Hellmann transport and logistics group, which is based in Osnabruck.
